Securing your Discord account from hackers is crucial, especially if you are running servers, or you are a moderator, so you may wonder how to enable your Discord authenticator.
2FA, which is known as two-factor authentication, is one of the best ways to implement in order to secure your Discord account.
So, Discord has this feature to help you and your team get rid of disturbing perpetrators.
However, it will keep you stress-free from thinking about the security of your account.
In addition to that, the Discord 2FA security setup can be done either on your PC or your mobile phone such as Android and iPhone.
Today, I will teach you how to enable Discord Authenticator in 6 easy steps.
How to Enable Discord Authenticator
To set up the Discord Authenticator, open your app on your phone and go to the account settings and tap “My Account”.
So on the “My Account” page, tap on “Enable Two-Factor Auth” to start the setup process.
Then you have to download the Google Authenticator or Authy app to use it as a code generator for every login you do.
Note that will be using an iPhone in this tutorial, as it’s the fastest and easiest way to apply the method.
But if you would like to use your PC, you can follow the same steps and try to implement them on your Discord PC version.
1.Tap on your Discord profile picture
Then, when you open it, tap on your profile picture at the bottom right of the screen.
Therefore, you will navigate automatically to your Discord User Settings page.
As extra security before continuing, if you feel that there is someone tracking your activity, tap on the “Privacy & Safety”.
Then tap on “Keep me safe” on the new page, so Discord will scan each message you receive.
2.Enable the Two-Factor Authenticator
After opening the User Settings page, tap on the “Account” button.
Then a new page will show up, so here you can always edit the Discord Authenticator settings.
So on that page, tap on the blue “Enable Two-Factor Auth” option.
Then a small popup will show up asking you for your Discord password.
So add your password, then tap on the red “Okay” button.
3.Download the Authenticator app for your Discord
Now that you’ve added your password and tapped on the “Okay” button, you will be navigated to a new page.
So on the page, you will see that Discord is asking you to download an authenticator app to proceed.
However, the Authenticator app can be used for different accounts as well such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and much more.
But Discord allows you to use two authenticator apps, which are Google Authenticator and Authy.
It’s up to you to choose the one you’re comfortable with.
Note that we will be using the Google Authenticator app.
So tap on the small blue “Google Authenticator” link, then the Google instruction page will open.
Now, the page will open on the Apple Store for iPhone or Google Play for Android.
Then tap on “Get” to install the app.
4.Activate the 2FA Authentication
Finally, after you’ve successfully installed the Google Authenticator app, open it.
Then tap on the “Get Started” button.
A new page will show up asking you to decide that either you “Scan a QR code” or “Enter a setup key”.
Tap on the “Enter a setup key”.
Now go back to the Discord app and tap on “Done” to close the Google page.
Then, on the Discord Authenticator page, tap on the blue “Next” button.
On the new page, you will see a 2FA Code generated by Discord, so tap on “Copy” to copy it.
Then go to the Google Authenticator app and paste the code on the “Key” field.
However, before tapping on “Add”, type Discord Login (Your Username) in the Account field, then tap on “Add”.
Now you will be redirected to a new page, copy the code that you see by tapping on it.
Then go directly to the Discord app and tap on the “Next” button to paste it.
Finally, your Discord Authenticator will be enabled successfully.
5.Enable the SMS Authentication for extra security
When you activate the Discord 2FA Authenticator, you will see a new page with the “Enable SMS Authentication” button.
This extra authentication can save you a lot of time if you’ve lost your phone or can’t access it anymore.
So you can recover your Discord account using your phone number if you want.
However, it’s optional, but it’s worth it, as you will need it with the time.
So tap on the “Enable SMS Authentication” button.
Then enter your phone number, and tap on “Next”.
After that, Discord will send you a code by SMS, so copy that code and paste it on Discord to activate the SMS authentication.
6.Save the Backup Codes
On the Discord Authenticator settings menu, tap on “View Backup Codes”.
A new popup will show up, so add your password and tap “OK” to access the page.
Now you will see a new page with 10 backup codes generated by Discord, so you can take a screenshot of them and save it in a safe place.
However, these backup codes will also help you for extra security if you lost your 2FA access.
You can also tap on “Generate New Backup Codes” to generate 10 new codes.
But if you generate new backup codes, you can’t use the old ones anymore, so you have to use the new ones only.
What Authenticator Does Discord Use
Discord has two Authenticator apps that you can use, such as Google Authenticator and Authy.
However, they are both ideal and famous apps in the 2FA (Two Factor Authenticator) industry, and they are hard to get cracked by hackers.
Despite the fact that hackers can get access to your Discord account in tricky ways, after enabling the 2FA it will be very hard to get the generated codes.
Unless you decided to give them personally to the hacker.
But there is an Authenticator based on Discord that you can use in the settings.
Which is “Scan QR code”, and you can use it to log in to your Discord PC by only scanning the QR Code in the login page on the Discord PC app.
What Happens if I Lose My Two-factor Authentication
If you lost the Two-Factor authentication on Discord, or you don’t have access to your phone anymore, you have four solutions:
- You request an SMS Authentication code using your Phone Number.
- Login with the backup codes that you’ve saved from your Discord Settings.
- Check if you have a PC or Mobile phone with your Discord account opened on it to check the backup codes and get them.
- On your PC, search for “discord_backup_codes.txt” if you’ve used your PC when you activated the 2FA.
Now, if none of these solutions worked for you, then the last option is to contact Discord Support directly.
Discord Two Factor Authenticator is crucial for your account security.
So if you really care about your account, it’s good to enable the 2FA on it.
However, you can use the Google Authenticator and the Authy apps to generate the login codes.
But if you lost your phone, or you can’t get access to the 2FA authenticator, then you have to use the backup codes for sure.
Otherwise, it’s better to contact Discord support to get help.
So today, you’ve learned how to enable the Discord Authenticator in 6 easy steps.
