Android System WebView is an important element on your Android phone, however, if it got disabled, you may wonder how to enable it quickly.
When you use most of the applications, and you see a link then you tap on it, it’ll take you to a web browser page that is served by the Google Chrome browser app.
Yet, sometimes apps that you are using may crash, so you find out after that the Android System WebView was disabled.
So it’s very easy to solve this issue.
Today I will show you how to enable Android System Webview in 4 simple steps.
Why Is Android System WebView Disabled?
The Android System WebView is disabled because of the Android Nougat 7.0 update that migrated its functionality into chrome.
Moreover, it affected Android 8.0 Oreo and Android 9.0 Pie as well.
So the migration means that you have to download and update the WebView app only by updating Google Chrome.
However, if you’re on Android 10 and above, it doesn’t impact your OS functionality, because it was separated again from the Google Chrome app.
If you want to enable the Android WebView, you can simply disable the Google Chrome, after that update then uninstall the WebView app, and re-enable only Google Chrome again.
How To Enable Android System WebView
To enable the Android System WebView on your phone, go to your phone settings then open the apps page and find the Chrome app to disable it.
After disabling the Google Chrome app, go to the play store and search for the WebView app to update it.
If you find an update for the app do it.
Otherwise, simply uninstall it and reboot your phone.
Keep in mind that this method works only with Android Nougat 7, Android 8.0 Oreo, and Android 9.0 Pie.
So we strongly recommend you to only work with these three Android versions.
Because if you have an Android 10.0 OS and above, you may risk getting severe technical issues on your phone after uninstalling the Android System WebView.
So to check your Android OS version, on your Android phone settings scroll down to the bottom, then tap on “About Phone”.
On the About Phone page, you will see your Android OS version which may be (7, 8, 9, 10, 11) in the field “Android Version” or “EMUI” in other devices.
So it varies between different phones, but this is the general method to check your Android OS version.
1.Disable Chrome On The Settings
To disable Chrome on the settings, start by opening your phone settings.
Then go to the Apps page by scrolling down on the settings page and tapping on the “Apps” option.
Now find the Google Chrome app and tap on it.
After tapping on the Google icon, you will be redirected to a new page which is the Google app settings page.
On that page, tap on the “Disable” button.
Then a new popup will show up asking you to confirm, so click on “Disable App”.
Another popup will show up, so click on “OK” to replace the Chrome app with the phone’s Factory app.
This will disable completely the Chrome app on your phone.
However, it will be temporary until you enable the Android System Webview.
2.Update the WebView app
When you disable the Google Chrome app open your Play Store.
Then tap on the search icon and search for “Android System Webview”.
No on the Android system Webview you will see an “Update” button.
Therefore, tap on the “Update” button to update the app.
However, if you can’t see the update button, it means that the app is already up-to-date.
So follow the next step to uninstall it instead.
3.Uninstall the Android WebView app
If you can’t see the “Update” button, you will see it instead of the “Uninstall” button.
However, if you don’t see any button, make sure that you’ve applied the first step.
So when you see the “Uninstall” button, tap on it to uninstall the Android System WebView, so you can enable it later on.
4.Restart your Phone
After uninstalling the Android System WebView app, restart your phone.
Then go to the Play Store to enable the Chrome app again.
After enabling the chrome app, everything should have to work fine.
Just make sure to check if there is an “Update” button that occurs upon enabling the Chrome app.
If there is no Update button, then you have to check the WebView app if it’s enabled.
So go to the app that contains links, then tap on the link to test if the browser opens on the app.
If everything is fine this means the issue is resolved.
However, if the issue is still represented, make sure that you’ve uninstalled both Android System WebView and the Chrome app.
When you are using an application, then you tap on a link and the web browser don’t open, the WebView app is always the problem.
So it’s crucial to enable it because it’s very likely that is disabled because of a software update.
However, the best way to enable it is by first disabling the Google Chrome then updating the Android WebView and uninstalling it, therefore, enabling it after restarting the mobile phone.
Just keep in mind to apply the steps above only on Android Nougat 7.0, Android 8.0 Oreo, and Android 9.0 Pie.
So today you’ve learned how to enable the Android System Webview in 4 easy steps.
