Each story card on Instagram has a 15 seconds limit.
So when you try to upload a story that is longer than 15 seconds, it will be cut into multiple cards.
However, the only method that you can apply to upload long videos to your Instagram stories is by posting an IGTV video.
Basically, it’s a trick that you can apply on your Instagram to push people to watch the full video.
So today, I will teach you how to make Instagram stories longer by following five easy steps.
Note that we will be using an iPhone for this tutorial.
How To Make Instagram Stories Longer
To make Instagram stories longer, tap on the “+” button to upload a video, then choose your video from the gallery and upload it.
You have to post an IGTV video on your Instagram profile page, then upload it to your story.
So when people open your story on Instagram, they will be able to watch the first 15 seconds of it.
However, you can add a caption to push people to watch your video completely.
So when they tap on the video to watch it completely, they will remain on the story page but in a new tab.
Now, if they finish watching the video, they can go back to stories.
And they will be able to continue watching the other cards of your stories, such as photos or other videos.
Then, when your Instagram app opens, tap on your profile photo at the bottom right of the screen to navigate to your profile page.
After that, tap on the “+” button, then you’ll see a pop-up with multiple options.
Here, you can start the process of posting the video on your Instagram profile page.
However, you can upload videos on your Instagram account profile page from your PC.
But you have to post the story using your mobile phone.
2.Select the video
When the pop-up opens, tap on the “Post” option, which is the first option.
Then you will be redirected to your phone’s gallery page.
Therefore, you can select your video on the gallery page.
We will choose a 3 minutes video.
But note that you can post a video up to 10 minutes long if you have a normal account.
But if you’re verified on Instagram, you can upload up to 60 Minutes videos.
So you will be able to make your Instagram stories longer than 10 minutes.
Keep in mind that if you choose to capture a video on Instagram, you are limited to only 60 Seconds.
This is why it’s better to capture the video out of Instagram, then post it from your phone’s gallery.
3.Upload it as a post on your Instagram
Now that you’ve opened the gallery page, and you selected your video, tap on it “Next” to post it on your Instagram profile page.
So when you tap on “Next”, a new page will open.
On the page, you can add a filter to your video, or you can trim it if you want to post a part of it.
When you are ready, tap on the blue “Next” button at the top right of the screen.
Then a new page will open which is the final edit page where you can tag people, write a caption and add a location to your post.
However, you can add a thumbnail or a cover to your video.
This will make it clickable as you are trying to make the Instagram stories longer.
So on the same page, tap on your video, then it will open.
So, on the new page, tap on the “+” button to add a thumbnail from your phone’s gallery.
On the other hand, you can slide the video progress bar to choose the best clip and add it as a cover.
After you finish the editing, tap on “Done”, then tap on the blue “Share” button.
Then wait a few seconds, and you will see that your video is shared on your Instagram profile page.
So follow the next step to post this video on your Instagram story.

Now your story page will open, so you can edit and add captions to your story.
For example, you can add, “To watch the full video, tap on it” or “Click Here to watch the full video”.
However, when you are on the story page of your video, you can see the first 15 seconds of it.
5.Post the video on your Instagram Story
Finally, when you edit your video, and you are ready to post it to your story, tap on the “Your story” button at the bottom left of the screen.
After that, Instagram will post your long video on the story and people will be able to watch the first 15 seconds of it and tap on it to complete the rest of it.
However, if you want to share this story with your close friends, you can select the “Close Friends” button.
Or, if you want, you can tap on the right white Arrow button at the bottom right of the screen.
Then share it individually with someone.
So this is how you make your Instagram stories longer by 10 minutes and more.
How Long Can Instagram Stories Be
Basically, Instagram stories’ ideal length is 15 seconds for each card, so if you post a video that is more than 15 seconds it will be cut to multiple cards.
For example, if you captured a 60 Seconds video directly on Instagram, it will be posted on the story as four particular cards that are 15 seconds each.
But Instagram recently announced in December 2021 that they’re testing stories of up to 60 Seconds.
However, if you have a video that’s longer than 60 Seconds which means it’s an IGTV video, you can make your story longer by posting it.
Then when people see it in your story, they can complete watching it by tapping on it.
So it’s a useful trick, to upload longer videos on your Instagram stories.
Sometimes to get more engagement on your Instagram account as a business or the Creator, you need to attract people with short films to build your brand awareness.
So, posting the video on your Instagram profile page will help people recognize your brand faster.
